Shop of the Day…UPPERCASE

psuppercase

Top. Eclecto Pouches and Eclecto Pads Bottom. Prim and Proper Electonote and Facts and Figures Eclectonote

Janine of UPPERCASE makes notebooks, pouches, and mirrors amongst other things that are inspired by vintage materials and imagery, found lettering, and typewriters (if you are familiar with UPPERCASE you know about the typewriter inspiration already). I first discovered Janine’s notebooks through Design Sponge and fell in love with ecelectonotes, which is the name of the notebook line. But Janine also makes other things using vintage recycled materials, as you can see, that are of equal interest. For more from Janine, click here to visit the shop.

New Guest Poster…Lupin!

il_430xn44212619Goldfinch, Bird Brooch

Sorry I wasn’t able to get this up yesterday…I am feeling much better now and am so excited that we will have some guest posts coming up over the next couple of weeks from the lovely Laura of Lupin. I have been in love with Laura’s handmade felt pieces for some time, but this chica’s creative side goes well beyond her totally awesome shop, Lupin. She has also some wonderful DIY tutorials on her blog, which I love, love, love! But before we jump into her incredible gift wrapping tutorials that I’ll be posting over the next couple of weeks, let’s take some time to get to know Laura (Lupin) herself….

il_430xn22393734Abstract Felt Mobile or Wall Hanging

Papernstitch: Tell us a little more about yourself.

Laura: I’m 26 and I currently live with my boyfriend in Gloucester in a flat, which is half covered in books (his) and half in felt (mine). I’ve been making stuff for honestly as long as I can remember, making presents for people and furniture for my dolls when I was a kid and handmade cards for all and every occasion. A couple of years ago I was thinking about what to make my friends and neighbours for Christmas, thought about making some felt ornaments, stumbled upon Etsy and thought wow! I’d never really thought about selling my work before, but I made it my new year’s resolution to set up shop and here I am!      Lupin Handmade has developed hugely over the past two years but I’m still just finding my feet in the crafty business world, it’s all very new and exciting.

il_430xn38516553

Papernstitch: Tell us about your shop, Lupin.

Laura: In my shop I sell sweet and pretty felt treats like teacup brooches, floral hairbands and polkadot pincushions as well as silly stuff like panda masks and moustache disguises (which always make me giggle). I hope my work will make people smile! I started my blog as a sort of crafting diary to help me keep track of what I was making and what I wanted to make, but I rather neglected it until I made the decision to start my Crafting 365 project. I did something crafty every day, took a photo and blogged about it, and it transformed my blog, my working processes and my whole business, it made me much more focused and self-disciplined and more creative too.
I love connecting with people through my blog, especially sharing my ”behind the scenes” photos of my working process and writing crafty tutorials – I love my business but it’s nice to invent little projects that have nothing to do with making money sometimes!

il_430xn22599390Circles Pincushions

Papernstitch: What inspires you to make things?

Laura: I’ve always enjoyed solving the problem of “how can I make one of those?”, and making stuff has always been my favourite way to while away an afternoon so it’s wonderful to have the chance to make stuff
for a living. I get inspired a lot by the vibrant colours of the felt I use in my work, and draw a lot of my ideas from nature. The more I make the more things I think of to make – one idea sparks another five and it’s just a shame that there are never enough hours in the day to sew them all.

Magnolia Moonlight

psmagnolia

Top. Vine Notebook and Shout Card 6 Pack Bottom. Magnolia Moonlight 2009 Wall Calendar and Bird Pattern Cards

It seems that I have been mentioning paper goods shops a lot lately, but I have been stumbling upon so many, I feel the need to share. The holidays always put me in the mood to write a nice little card to someone I love. So today, I thought I would do a quick post about designer, Christina Flowers, who has a charming paper company, Magnolia Moonlight, based in Charlottesville, VA.

When I received an email from Christina, I was hooked. Her work is playful and sunny, but Christina also stocks pieces that are more neutral and modern. Best of both worlds. You will find great calenders, cards, and notebooks in the shop. For more from Magnolia Moonlight, click here to visit the shop or here for the website.

Handmade Cavalcade

handmadecavalcade-holiday

Jaime of Blue Stitch Books let me know about this great event that will be happening in NYC in a couple of short weeks. It is being put together by the {New New} York Street Team. If you are in New York, make sure you check this out. Here’s all the info:

WHEN: The Holiday Handmade Cavalcade will take place 10am – 5pm on December 6, 2008.
WHERE: The Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street, NYC, between Church Street and Broadway. Subway: 1/9 trains to Franklin Street; A/C/E, N/R, J/M/Z, and 6 trains to Canal Street.
Admission: FREE

A spunky newcomer to the indie shopping scene, the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade claims a simple mission: to invite people to rediscover the pleasure of giving the gift of something handmade. The one-day event will showcase more than 30 locally-grown purveyors of handmade goods. Shoppers looking to support local craft can fill up their holiday stockings by perusing three floors of jewelry and accessories, clothing, housewares, ceramics, paper goods, handcrafted soaps and bath products, and original artwork. Shoppers who arrive before noon will receive exclusive coupons for discounts at and after the event, and everyone who attends will have the opportunity to enter into a free raffle to win creations from participating vendors.

For more information on this event, please visit www.handmadecavalcade.com, or email handmadecavalcade@gmail.com.

And make sure you check out Jaime’s shop for great paper goods.

Happy Owl Glass

Tracy Bull, creator of Happy Owl Glass, makes the coolest glass pieces and a whole lot more. I have always loved the beautiful glass jewelry that Tracy makes, but had no idea that Happy Owl Glass also makes mini-dishes, lights, and prints. I love the way that illustration is incorporated into all of the work at Happy Owl. I have a soft spot for illustration, so all the prints stocked in the shop are right up my alley.

pshappyowlglass

Top to Bottom. Great Grey Owl Tiny Dish, Handprinted Illustrations, Salvaged Glass Pendants

If you know me personally, then you probably know that seafoam green is my color! And so, naturally, I love that tiny owl dish. And if you love it too, then you absolutely must enter the next papernstitch giveaway because we are giving away three of these tiny dishes (retail value of $120) along with loads of other stuff in early December!

Okay, back on track…Here’s what Tracy has to say about her work: “I have always been fascinated by the likes of birds, trees and simple curiosities around me that deserve a closer look. I try to incorporate these ideas into my glass, feeling that they are reachable by many walks of life. I pursued the media of glass with a background in graphic design. Because of this rigid mindset, I can’t seem to shake the look of hard lines in much of my work. However, I try to create a complimentary mix of warm subject matter with fine technical detail to amount to a friendly body of functional glasswork. I hope you enjoy it.”

House Cameo Pin from Crafty Folk

Well, it’s Friday. And it has been a long week. So, I am quite thankful to have a couple of days to relax and just hang out over the weekend doing nothing. To wrap up the day, I thought I would leave you with something I found on the papernstitch flickr group, the cameo pin above, which lead me to discovering this incredible shop: Crafty Folk. The pin is so cool. I love the little house drawings that I am seeing pop up everywhere recently.

I have lots of great things planned for next week, including more gift guides, some great holiday tutorials, and a whole lot more. I think I just might have to do a longer blog post on Crafty Folk too because I am absolutely loving all the cameos in the CF shop!
